Introduction
It seems that every day or two brings a report on some newvulnerability or security hole. Administrators are advised on whatpatch to apply or what workaround to employ. With so many securityalerts, we’ve become complacent in the same way that the daily litanyof felonies reported in the newspapers and on TV has immunized usagainst the reported news. The KLEZ virus, which made the top-ten listsfor three months running in the spring of 2002 could have beenprevented with a patch issued fourteen months earlier.
Most network administrators are doing the equivalent of drivingwithout insurance. It isn’t that they’re incompetent or that they don’tcare, but that the demand on them is to show positive results today—toput out the fires that are burning now. They don’t have the luxury oftime to create fire prevention plans.
This book is written for them. In plain language, with lots ofexamples, it shows how to secure a web server and protect a networkfrom most attacks.
